coast affair in which animals reportedly have been mistreated they are problems not horse said the director of the Nebraska Humane Society Bettie Phelps said Monday that after spending several hours with the 90 horses and 53 riders quartered in Superior she is convinced that the stories concerning animal mistreat aren't true As for reports of animals being withdrawn from the Saratoga Springs NY to Sac ramento Calif race because of malnutrition foot soreness saddle sores and other prob lems Mrs Phelps said: far as I can tell the riders who have dropped out have done so on their own because of fric tion within the group (of rid ers) not because of horse prob Mrs Phelps said two veter inarians travel with the partici pants their salaries paid in Grand 11 i Hastings! tilt an old said Mrs Phelps those horses are in good condition They are being fed excellent food including supplementary vitamins and I could see ab solutely nothing seriously wrong with any one of them" She said that less pay in recent months com bines with increased employer taxes to brighten the fund's out look Unemployment Insurance Division Eldon Peterson added The higher employer contri butions were imposed by the 1976 Legislature after Labor Department officials warned that the fund was headed for a deficit At the end of June the fund contained almost $28 million Peterson said The compares with $40 night to see what live theater's all about Well into the second act a window shade snapped up in an unplanned moment and the ac next line was have our ups and Even the duo on stage saw the humor of the miscue and there was a genuine rare moment of stop the show laughter between them Act II of Neil also was the best played by the six soap opera stars who will perform nightly at 7:30 through Saturday not the best written of the three but Jaime Lyn Bauer and Tom Hallick of Young and the played it with such finesse that it stole the evening Apparently the audience was attracted by the TV characters whose agonies they share each day on the tube more than by Neil witty three one act plays that take place in Suite 719 of New Plaza Hotel And if small crowd was a true indication Young and the gets better ratings than represented by Jim Sikking and Emily McLaughlin or of Our repre sented by John Lupton The sixth major role is filled by Jeanne Cooper of and Restless" opening was spotty awkwardly acted in too many places perhaps showing a lack of rehearsal though the company came to Omaha after a week in Milwaukee Ironically the first act should have played the best closer to the stuff of the daytime se rial Here comedy turns to pathos as Sam and Karen marriage shows its fall en arches when she discovers he is having an affair John Lupton as Sam worked well but Emily McLaughlin as the cheated wife swallowed lines and failed to deliver too Renieto many on the money The result was like a cake of Ivory that sank The same happened to an ex tent between Miss Cooper and Sikking in the third act as they played a beleaguered coupler trying desperately to get their daughter out of the locked bath room for her wedding Here though the broad broad slapstick that ouiit to a fevered madness more than covered up for sloppy mo ments Miss Cooper crossed Maude with Phyllis Diller for her phys ical comedy Sikking had the best of the third outing only be cause he had more of the gim micks on his side But Jaime Lyn Bauer who got the biggest hand upon en trance was spectacular in timing in pacing in a smooth transition from nervous antici pation to reckless abandon The lissome gorgeous ac tress was so good Hallick al most came across as a straight man But he too played to per fection Together they worked the au dience into a lather with high suds comedy and a frothy fin ish The stars said in an earlier interview that more than half those who come to see them have never been to live theater before If the case Neil Si play is a fine in troduction And if they come to see the stars the audiences be disappointed because all six major players obligingly sign autographs in the Orpheum lobby after each performance An old fishin buddy named Ed Used his CB to locate a
